Over the winter of and the spring of , Chris Costello and I put in countless hours, sacrificed family time, made countless phone calls, purchased items to better the program from our own pockets, and were given the okay at that time to dismantle what passed for the football program in this town and create something good. Through all that time Chris and I had been working with Tiffany Marcano and she was fully on board and was willing to help us get what we wanted and more importantly make the changes these kids needed. It was completely refreshing to have a genuine caring partner in town hall. We had productive meetings with Pop Warner and they were willing to welcome us in to the fold.
Those little stickers you see on the back of football helmets are normally awarded for touchdowns, big plays on defense and the like. On the Bergen County Stars, stickers are awarded for academic achievements and demonstrations of character. Then the coaches look for two or three kids each week whose behavior defined that characteristic. In Florida, the Stars won three games in a one-week span to capture the title. They beat teams from North Carolina and Detroit before dusting the Brooklyn Chiefs in the championship game, We wanted them to have fun … they went to Busch Gardens and did a couple other things.
WELCOME TO THE BERGEN COUNTY JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE
It's and North Bergen's only youth football team, the Red Raiders, is preparing for one of its first games: Clearing the field of rocks and glass, collecting them in their helmets, throwing them onto the north side of the field, and figuring out who gets to wear the good pads first. There are no cheers, just kids running around on a dusty field with rundown equipment. Fast-forward 50 years and the dusty field is replaced by a grass one, part of a recreational complex that includes a softball field, a basketball court and a gym.
